What is the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge For?

The Ice Bucket Challenge is a fun, shareable way to:
-
Raise awareness about ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease)
-
Encourage donations to ALS organizations and research
-
Show solidarity with people and families living with ALS
So if you’ve ever wondered, “Ice Bucket Challenge is for what?” — it’s for awareness, support, and real research progress.
-
Fill a bucket with cold water + ice.
-
Record a short video (10–20 seconds is perfect).
-
Say who you’re supporting and include: “Every August Until a Cure.”
-
Pour the bucket over your head.
-
Donate and tag 3 friends.
Safety note: If you have heart conditions, circulation concerns, or other health risks, skip the ice and donate/share instead.
How to take the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

ALS Ice Bucket Challenge Origin Story

In summer 2014, the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge spread around the world as people posted videos, donated, and nominated friends to keep the chain going. The challenge became closely associated with people living with ALS and advocates who helped amplify it — including Anthony Senerchia, Pete Frates, and Pat Quinn — turning a simple idea into a global movement.
What 2014 donations helped make possible
The original 2014 Ice Bucket Challenge sparked worldwide participation and raised major funding for ALS organizations. Those donations helped accelerate research efforts, expand collaboration, and support work that improved understanding of ALS biology — pushing the field forward faster than it would have otherwise.
